Draw this again - Apple girl - Sasshi :3 by tin-aw Draw this again - Apple girl - Sasshi :3 by tin-aw
This is my entry for the draw this again contest by deviantart.

It's a portrait of a girl eating an apple. The older one was done back on 2011.The new one I finished on September 27, 2012 .
I improved a lot on the new one and I am really happy with it. It is probably my best work ever. :D
Hope you guys like it :)

I'm really happy with my style right now. I can only draw using pencils.
I don't know how to color. So I'm stuck with black n white. =P

Thank you! Yeah! this will is gonna be the last one for sure. I spent more than 20 hours for this. :D
It's just so much fun to redo my old works. I was very thorough on the details and shading on this to make it look realistic as I can.

Oh you're right! They are really good.

But practice makes perfect, and I have no doubt that you can one day be on their level if you keep on drawing!

Well to be honest, the first one was, as you said yourself, a sketch! You're comparing a rough sketch from a year ago to a legit piece that you finished this year? Yes, yes I think we will see improvement there lol! Just... amazing job :D

thanks! yes it was my first stab in drawing realistic portraits. I did my best to get a realistic face that looks as close as my reference pic which is what I was after for and the rest was just sketches of the hand, hat and coat. It wasn't necessary to do those. You can call it a WIP I guess even though I didn't intend to finish it. I like it being half-finished as it is, because the main focus is the face. I am not a pro and I haven't studied art at all. That is what I can do back then. Hope you understand.:)

I got chu, I got chu. By "havent' studied art" to you mean that you haven't studied it at a college level and beyond? I'm don't really consider high school or recreation center classes to truly be advanced studying, but do you? I can see what you mean about the first portrait. How did you improve so much in such a relatively short span of time? I'm curious :)

It means I "never ever" studied art at all. Except for kindergarten where I got to play around with crayons. I can't tell about high school or recreation centre classes since I haven't been to one. I didn't go because I wanna draw in my own style and it's just a hobby thing for me. :D
Well actually right now I am thinking of checking out recreation centre art class because I am getting deep into this hobby. =P

I did it by buying a good sketchpad and pencils. Then I just tried drawing. Also I checked the works of the pros here in deviantart and see their WIP or tutorials. I practice and tried my best to make use of my pencils. I am not good yet so to improve I check on the areas of my drawing that needs improvement and on my next drawing I try to do a better job on that area. That's how I improve. :D

It'd be cool to see how the rec class turns out for you. I don't think their purpose is to change the style where you draw, but give techniques and tutorials not unlike the ones here on DA :) Hope it works out for you.

I like your method. It's intriguing to me in the aspect that you first bought the good sketchpad and pencils, and then tried drawing. I never really had any legitimate art materials, apart from lined school paper and a number 2 pencil. I've got a sketchpad now, but still no art pencils. I just drew whatever I felt like, and never really tried hard to improve until recently. It seems almost like you're trying to "grow in to" your materials, in the way that you've got the best materials, and now you want to improve your art to match. Am I right or totally off? XP

Thanks! I hope I get to improve more out of the rec class. :D
yeah I guess your right. I just realized that now after you said it. I didn't plan to improve that way but it just happened like that. :D
I also use the same materials as you. I used any paper just to draw on. But then I always like to buy a sketchpad so I can keep my drawings in one piece. Also normal paper isn't very good at drawing. Erasing a lot ruins the paper easily.:)
The number 2 pencil is good. I use it a lot too but when I dug deep here in DA and saw pencil drawings here, I saw that they are on a totally different level as my works and they are using a bunch of pencils. So I thought I would try it out and maybe I would get better results.
It wasn't easy to use the new pencils because I didn't like changing pencils back and forth. I can barely even tell the difference with the pencils darkness. But after using it a lot, you just get to learn to use them. The results are pretty good. :)
